The United States of America will be celebrating 250 years of Independence in 2026. As a part of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration, a number of railroads have repainted their prototype locomotives into patriotic red, white and blue schemes, which Micro-Trains is replicating on commemorative 40’ smooth-side high-cube boxcars.

Weathered Burlington Northern In 1970, Burlington Northern was formed through the mergers of Great Northern and Northern Pacific, and then merged with ATSF in 1995 to form BNSF. BNSF is one of the largest freight railroads in the country with over 32,000 miles of rail.

Weathered Burlington Northern ex-Railbox Built in 1975 by Pacific Car & Foundry for Railbox, this 50’ boxcar was hastily repatched and placed into Burlington Northern series 250219-250481. Burlington Northern was formed through the mergers of Great Northern and Northern Pacific in 1970, and then merged with ATSF in 1995 to form BNSF.

Weathered Pennsylvania Built in May 1950 for Pennsylvania, these 40’ boxcars belonged to class X43B and featured Superior doors. They were rebuilt in the late 1960s and continued in service through the 1970s before being replaced by larger capacity 50’ cars. Pennsylvania was a large Class 1 railroad formed in 1846 and grew to be a predominant shipper on the east coast until 1968 when it merged with rival New York Central to form Penn Central.

Weathered Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Commonly carrying coke and coal, P&LE operated from Ohio to Pennsylvania and West Virginia from 1875 to 1993 as a subsidiary of New York Central. P&LE also had a fleet of boxcars often marked with New York Central, later Penn Central, lettering.

Weathered Railbox Built in 1978 by Pacific Car & Foundry for Railbox, this 50’ boxcar was placed into Railbox series 20400-20899, and belonged to class XCF11A. A subsidiary of TTX, Railbox was founded in 1974 to address a nationwide boxcar shortage by creating a large pool of free-running boxcars seen from coast to coast.

Weathered TTX with “Wrecked” Tank Car Load Kit This PSH20-class 89’ TTX flat car was used for general purpose bulk loading of construction equipment, industrial machinery, or in this case, a wrecked tank car. TTX was established in 1955 as “Trailer Train,” and as their business evolved simply became “TTX” in a 1991 rebranding effort.
